The ascent of the icefall “Patri”, located in Valnontey in the beautiful Cogne Valley, is one of the most sought-after experiences for ice climbing enthusiasts. This icefall is one of the most impressive and scenic in the area and has been a true classic for many years. It can certainly be counted among the most beautiful icefalls in Italy… and beyond.
The climb starts with a few initial pitches that are not difficult but very beautiful, interspersed with ledges where it is possible to stop and comfortably admire the surrounding winter landscape. You then reach the amphitheatre, where at least three different climbing lines are possible: on the left the classic Patrì wall, which ends with a very particular pitch in a narrow gorge (goulotte), or further to the right the so-called “Candelone”, a legendary 50-metre pitch, vertical and sustained.
A good technical level is required, as well as knowledge of abseiling techniques for the descent.
